Day 18 - Costa Rica v Greece

Pre-Match Thoughts
Battle of the surprise packages! I'm sure most people didn't expect any of these mobs to make it to the knock out stage. Costa Rica were superb in their games, surprising both Uruguay and Italy, while Greece sneaked through via a last gasp (and very dramatic) penalty against the Ivory Coast.

Gauging by what I've seen, Costa Rica are the better football side, but Greece have that streak of luck about them that could still work in their favour. Like by holding on till 85 minutes and grabbing a winner. All the same, I'll go with a 2-0 win to the Happiest People on Earth.

First Half
Somewhat unsurprisingly, the Greeks have been playing this one mainly on the safe side, helped by a vapid Costa Rica side. As it was, the best chance fell to Greece, a great cross from the left required a great save when the #14 made good contact.

Bar that, it's all been a triffle dull.

Second Half
Plenty to write about, but no energy to do it... Costa Rica went for it and got their rewards with a fine finish from Brian Ruiz. However, suddenly one of their players lost all blood from their head and got sent off totally needlessly.

Inevitably, Greece equalised in injury time. The big question now is... will I stay awake for all of extra time?

Extra Time
To which, just about. So a short summary - Costa Rica held on to make it to penalty shoot out, in which they won 5-3. Only one missed out of nine, so hard cheese to the poor Greek, as Terry-Thomas might have said.

Result
1-1, CR through on pens, to meet those crazy Dutch guys.
